The teacher will guide the educational process and provide specialized instruction at the elementary, middle, or secondary school level for students with autism and related disabilities in classrooms of four to seven students. S/he will use various techniques to promote learning, including individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small-group work. The teacher will develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student that includes personalized goals that are tailored to the student's individual needs and ability. When appropriate, the program includes a transition plan outlining specific steps to prepare students with disabilities for middle school or high school or, in the case of older students, a job or postsecondary study. The teacher shall review the IEP with the student's parents, school administrators and other professionals. The teacher works closely with parents to inform them of their child's progress and suggests techniques to promote learning at home.
The teacher implements the Maryland State Curriculum as well as other appropriate guides and assigns work geared toward each student's needs and abilities. S/he is involved in the students' behavioral, social, and academic development, helping the students adapt in social situations and engage in socially acceptable behavior.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaches classes at the elementary, middle or high level, in core academic subjects, elective or special subjects, within a specific area of special education. Prepares, adapts, and delivers instructional material. Develops suitable curricula and effective teaching methods based on assessment of students' needs. Evaluates students' academic and behavioral progress and participates in review and revision of IEP, as appropriate. Prepare individualized education plans in consultation with parents and IEP team members. Designs instruction, both individual and small group, which parallels the general education curriculum. Creates and maintains student records, and prepares reports relative to the work. Assists other professional staff in developing Functional Behavioral Analyses and Behavior Intervention Plans based on Positive Behavioral Supports. Selects appropriate texts, electronic and digital learning aids, materials, and supplies. Participates in teacher training, as required. The teacher shall also maintain open communication with supervisory and administrative staff who provide support and guidance throughout all aspects of the program. Manage classroom organization.

Must be certified in Special Education 6-12.
