The School Committee and the community of Newburyport, Massachusetts invite dynamic, creative and innovative candidates to apply for the position of Superintendent of Schools.
Newburyport is a coastal city located 37 miles north of Boston. Newburyport is rich in history and culture, arts and natural environments, with a beautifully restored downtown and commercial district with a breathtaking waterfront. Newburyport is proud of its school district and has established an outstanding partnership with the community-based Newburyport Education Foundation. The successful candidate will thrive while partnering with the community and the schools as both a visible, progressive educational leader and a reflective and approachable listener; someone who interacts well within the school district and whose actions demonstrate educational leadership that reinforces the values of the district.
The District educates 2,350 students, PreK-12, in four schools: Francis T. Bresnahan School, Grades PK-3 (new building 2014); Edward G. Molin Upper Elementary School, Grades 4-5 (major renovations 2014); Rupert A. Nock Middle School, Grades 6-8 (major renovations 2014); and Newburyport High School, Grades 9-12 (major renovations 2002). The Newburyport School Committee is comprised of seven members, and is chaired by the city's Mayor. The FY 2018 budget is $64 million, with $29 million allocated to Education (excluding benefits and capital).
Qualifications: License or eligibility for licensure as a superintendent of schools in Massachusetts is required; Master's Degree is required, doctorate preferred; minimum of five years of administrative experience and minimum of five years teaching experience in a K-12 system; central office experience preferred. A comprehensive understanding of and proven success in issues relating to special education, school finance, curriculum development, interest-based bargaining and development of a vision that includes the technology and partnerships that a 21st Century school system is expected.
The Newburyport School Committee is prepared to offer an initial three-year contract with a regionally competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. A benefits package is negotiable.
It is anticipated that the review of applications will begin on January 5, 2018 with interviews scheduled shortly thereafter. The starting date is on or about July 1, 2018.
