To provide students, teachers and staff with a library program that includes a quality collection and the tools to access resources by teaching information literacy skills and to manage the facility in accordance with standard library procedures and policies. To serve as a leader in developing and promoting the information literacy component of the school curriculum.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Receives general direction from the Principal or assignee.
May exercise technical and functional supervision over supervisory, professional, technical, clerical, and volunteer staff.
Essential Function Statements:Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Develop, implement, monitor, and revise individual school library selection policies, which reflect the district collection development policy.
Participate in planning, arranging, and using school library media facilities to support the instructional program.
Work effectively with the school library media advisory committee that includes administrators, teachers, students, parents, and other representatives of the community.
Provide support to staff for teaching and professional growth.
Serves as a learing facilitator within the school to support the development of effective strategies for teaching and learning.
Cooperatively plan with faculty and others to ensure that information literacy skills are integrated into the curriculum.
Motivate and guide students int he use of library services.
Assist students and staff in the optimal use of evolving technologies.
Provide technical support and training on information literacy to administrators, faculty, staff and students.
Order and process new books and other resources.
Monitor, assess, and implement exisiting and emerging technologies for possible applications to the library/instructional program.
Provide and maintain records and materials for all media/materials according to standardized classification systems.
Implement policies and procedures for ongoing maintenance of equipment and inventory.
Collaborate with school personnel and other professionals to develop annual and long-range goals.
Assign, instruct, supervise, and evaluate support staff, volunteers, and student assistants.
Perform routine descriptive cataloging such as fiction and children's literature.
Maintain student discipline and displays.
Perform all competencies as required by the District/State.
Perform related duties as assigned and required.
Present story hour to primary grades and use a variety of media to supplement story time. (Elementary Schools only)
The ethics and principles of librarianship and leadership in the profession.
Library organization, standard library practice including Dewey Decimal System.
School library selection tools and District selection policy.
Children and young adult literature and now to make connections for students with books and reading.
Curriculum and skills necessary for collaborative planning of curriculum and lessons with teachers.
Content area theories, and approved curriculum
Teaching methods and resources.
Modern, effective and innovative teaching practices and techniques.
Modern office and classroom equipment, including computers.
The principles of student growth, development, and learning to enhance student learning and understanding.
State and District curriculum guidelines or requirements.
Educational foundations of a school district, including the organization, administration, funding resources, and record keeping.
Native American communities in the southwest.
Cultural diversities of the local area.
Operate library automation program and to teach students and staff how to access resources.
Work collaboratively with teaching staff and to integrate library resources and technology into curriculum activities.
Use technology to teach and to show teachers how to integrate into curriculum.
Provide instructional leadership in ensuring the library is central in instruction.
Maintain library collection and manage and account for resources.
Assist the Media Center by providing technical support to teachers on available resources.
Maintain an effective teaching and learning climate.
Access, evaluate, and use information from a variety of sources.
Accurately demonstrate knowledge of librarianship and District curriculum.
Communicate with and obtain feedback from students in a manner that enhances student learning and understanding.
Appropriately apply the principles of student growth, development, and learning.
Nurture, motivate, teach and influence children.
Effectively utilize student assessment techniques and procedures.
Promote positive student behavior and a safe and healthy environment.
Create a positive atmosphere conducive to promoting student involvement and self-concept, recognizing student diversity.
Identify and respond to sensitive community and organizational issues, concerns and needs.
Participate in the development and administration of District goals, objectives and procedures.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing in the English language.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Understand and respect the cultural diversities, and native american traditional beliefs and practices, of students and other families.
Experience and Training Guideline:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: One year of related work experience in a school setting is desirable.
Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is appropriate educational field.
Licensure & Certificates: Applicants must have BA degree and possess or have the ability to obtain a NM teaching license (New Mexico has an alternative licensure program for applicants who possess a BA degree or higher). Applicants must have or possess the ability to obtain an endorsement in Library/Media.
Environmental Conditions: Classroom and field environment; may occasionally travel from site to site.
Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to heavy lifting and sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time.
