Benefits of Teaching in Baltimore
“I grew a lot as a first-year teacher, and Baltimore City Teaching
Residency played a key role in that. As a third-year teacher, I’m
already a literacy coach at my school” –
Matt Piwowarczyk, 2011 Resident
Since 2002, the Baltimore City Teaching Residency has trained more than
2,000 teachers who have helped transform city schools. Despite recent
progress, the need remains great – more than a third of students still do
not graduate on schedule. Principals and district officials appreciate
Residents’ talent and trust they will continue playing a key role in
ensuring that Baltimore students catch up to their peers.
Our training is radically simple: focused practice on key skills,
knowledge, and mindsets to get new teachers off to a strong start. Where
traditional teacher preparation leaves little time for hands-on
skill-building, our innovative training is centered around actual teaching
experience and focused practice on core skills, such as reflecting on
students’ values, experiences, and ambitions to create opportunities for
students to see themselves in challenging content that will prepare them
Certification that Counts:
We hold the highest standards for certification of any program in the
country. Upon graduating our program, Residents are recognized not simply
as certified teachers, but as having a proven track record of classroom
Full Salary and Benefits:
While pursuing certification, Teaching Fellows work full-time at a school
in the Baltimore City Public Schools district and earn a full teacher’s
salary plus comprehensive benefits. Once hired, you will be a full-time
employee of Baltimore City Public Schools and will earn the same starting
salary as any other
first-year teacher in the district
Baltimore City Teaching Residency is part of TNTP’s national network of
