ABOUT TENSQUARE
TenSquare is a national charter school support organization that works alongside schools and staff to make lasting and measurable change. Working in nine states and the District of Columbia, TenSquare has practice areas in school performance, talent services, facility development, and authorizer/agency support. TenSquare works in partnership with schools and school systems to help them navigate the charter accountability landscape, grow and thrive in an increasingly competitive charter school environment, and improve student outcomes. Specifically, we:

Provide strategic and focused accountability coaching for leaders and boards;
Develop and help implement high-impact and proven instructional coaching strategies and professional development to increase student achievement;
Strengthen organizational performance through enhanced processes for budgeting, staffing, scheduling, compliance, and other operational priorities;
Conduct in-depth performance audits and create data-driven action plans and operational road maps for change;
Provide performance data analysis and compliance support;
Facilitate long-term capacity building, strategic planning, and turnaround initiatives;
Recruit high performing teachers and leaders for PK-12 and Adult Ed schools;
Support planning, development, and financing of facilities projects.
Our strategic, hands-on engagements have led to significant gains in student achievement and organizational performance as measured by state exams and authorizer report cards.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Academic Leader will partner with the TenSquare school improvement team to drive school improvement efforts at Washington, DC-based partner schools.

The Senior Academic Leader will play a critical leadership role, spearheading identification of teaching and learning needs and design of strategies to drive student achievement and professional learning throughout the schools. The Senior Academic Leader is responsible for developing and/or recommending curriculum, managing assessments, and working with leadership in support of employee learning and development.

The ideal candidate is a master teacher with deep experience in quality instruction, including knowledge and experience with Common Core Standards and the PARCC assessment. S/he will possess a sense of urgency around student achievement results and a passionate commitment to adult learning. S/he will work closely with the senior leadership team and the academic leadership team to implement and contribute to the continual improvement of teaching and learning.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities of the Senior Academic Leader include:

Educational Leadership:
Coordinate the administration of internal and external standardized assessments
Use multiple sources of data to develop a plan for the improvement of student achievement and oversee the collection, analysis and utilization of this data in relation to specific students, teachers and curricula
Evaluate student achievement through detailed data analysis and present that data to instructional staff in an easily accessible format
Provide leadership to instructional staff in the use of data and the implementation of best instructional practices for high achievement
Recruit, hire, train, talented instructional staff in implementing best practices

Professional Development and Coaching:
Oversee teacher professional development via both in-house training sessions, external professional development opportunities
Develop teachers through professional learning with a focus on planning, modeling, and in-class coaching and follow-up with urgency to ensure teachers are effectively implementing what they have learned
Recommend teaching techniques and the use of different or new technologies
Support Principals in teacher observations; providing feedback of strengths and recommended enhancements for effective instruction
Identify and develop opportunities for collaboration with other educational agencies, and develop opportunities to share best practices in blended learning, project based learning, and effectively serving specific subgroups.
Monitor, and sustain a disciplined culture of high academic and behavioral standards

Curriculum Development:
Ensure curriculum and assessments are developed and implemented consistently and in accordance with state and national standards
Studies, evaluates, recommends the adoption of new instructional materials, methods and programs

KEY QUALIFICATIONS
Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Must have a Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree preferred; with a minimum of five years teaching and administrative experience
Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated success in the classroom, preferably at the secondary level within an urban school setting
A track record of strong quantitative student achievement results
Experience analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to inform instructional decisions
Experience instructing Common Core State Standards and knowledge of the PARCC assessment
Experience leading teachers and/or managing a team to achieve ambitious goals
Experience managing projects and programs with attention to detail
Experience designing curriculum is preferred
Experience in and/or understanding of the public-school system or charter schools is desirable

Good judgment and ability to navigate challenging situations
Ability to be flexible, resilient and adapt to changing priorities
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and rapidly-changing environment
