Description of position: The varsity coach oversees the management and operations of the South Portland high school field hockey program and serves as the head coach for the varsity team. Duties include practice and game planning/coaching, and teaching the fundamentals and strategies of the game, as well as working with the coaching staff to develop the entire program. Other duties include, but are not limited to: - Supervision of student-athletes - Establishing and maintaining positive public relations within and without the school - Attending all MPA and league meetings - Direct, supervise and counsel assistant coaches - Assist in the hiring of the sub-varsity and middle school coaching staff - Initiate and develop budget request for supplies and equipment - Support the athletic department philosophies, rules and policies - Assist with the coordination of team member eligibility compliance - Coordinate required paperwork with the athletic office - Coordinate appropriate parent meetings and team banquet - Work collaboratively with the booster organization - Maintain team records and statistics - Coordinate preseason practice and exhibition schedules with the athletic office - Oversee the tryout and team selection process - Be responsible for all equipment, uniforms and supplies issued to the program - Meet MPA coach eligibility requirements - Consult regularly with the athletic director regarding the status of the program - Other duties as assigned by the athletic director
