Job Description

The South Portland School Department is now accepting applications for a full-time Maintenance and Repair Technician. This person will work individually or as part of a team with other School Department employees; specifically an additional Maintenance and Repair Technician, a Master Plumber, and a Master Electrician.

The School Department is looking for a responsible, dedicated, and positive team player. The candidate should be detail oriented, take pride in his/her work, and be a self-starter. Ideally, applicants will have at least 5 years’ experience in the construction industry and have basic computer skills. Applicants must have a High School diploma or equivalent. Additional licensure is not required but preferred.

The successful candidate will be involved in a range of tasks from making minor repairs to equipment and/or the interior and exterior of building structures to more significant construction work. Such work may involve window installation, exterior wall replacement, and the construction/renovation of interior office space or exterior structures such as storage sheds, etc.

    Job Requirements

    • Given the scope of work involved, the successful candidate should be able to perform a range of tasks such as basic/finished carpentry work, hanging and mudding walls, installing flooring and ceilings, installing windows, installing bathroom and electrical fixtures, installing and repairing HVAC piping and ductwork, painting, etc. Although the School Department employs a Master Plumber and Master Electrician, experience in plumbing and electrical work is preferred.

      About the South Portland School Department: The School Department consists of five elementary school buildings, two middle school buildings, one high school, and a transportation facility. The five elementary schools were renovated or rebuilt in the early 2000’s. A complete renovation and addition to the high school was completed at the end of 2014. Both middle schools are in need of renovation and the School Department has been approved for the renovation and/or construction of its middle schools which may begin in 2020. Overall, the District encompasses over 700,000 square feet of classroom, meeting, cafeteria, and auditorium space. These buildings are used to educate 3,000 students and house over 500 teachers, educational technicians, and other staff.
