SUMMARY: Assists in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and by creating a climate of health and well-being in all district schools. The school nurse will lessen the impact of illness on the educational opportunity of individual students by prompt care, counseling and/or referral.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: other duties may be assigned
•Conducts school health service (utilizing volunteers and health aides), including examinations of students for hearing, vision and scoliosis (spine curvature) screenings.
•Provides consultant help for children who have special health problems.
•Develops and evaluates immunization procedures and records.
•Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
•Audits and assists to keep cumulative health records current for all students in building.
a.A scoliosis team will evaluate and record appropriate data for students on permanent records.
b.A vision team will be developed to evaluate and record findings
c.Immunization records are jointly recorded secretary and health persons.
•Visits student homes when necessary.
•Contact parent(s) of children referred by the principals.
•Prepares and submits reports for the Superintendent and the State Board of Health.
•Recommends exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
a.Principal is the excluding agent for the district on individual cases.
b.County Health is the excluding agent with epidemics.
•Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health defects.
•Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.
•Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
Delivering Health Services:
•Screening programs: vision, hearing and scoliosis.
•Maintain health records
•Referrals and recommendation to staff, parents and other specialists.
Providing Health Education:
•Individual health counseling.
•Preview and recommend health related materials. (health curriculum)
Team Member of Special Education Services:
•Gathering and recording information on each student with special needs.
•Obtaining medical diagnosis and recommendation form appropriate specialists in developing the nursing assessment.
•Developing and implementing the health section of the I.E.P.
Managing Communicable Disease Programs:
•Maintenance of Idaho State regarding current immunization standings.
•Conducting prevention programs for students, and staff and parents.
•Coordinating with families and community agencies during outbreaks.
Maintaining a Safe School Environment:
•Establishes programs that promote cleanliness.
Promotes School – Community:
Works with community agencies in order to share resources and facilities, foster community health education and plan local health projects.
